Trachili is a village in the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri, in the Regional Unit of Evoia. According to the 2011 census, it has 345 inhabitants. It is built at an altitude of 420 meters.[2].
Historical information
The area of the village bears traces of habitation from prehistoric times. An ancient cemetery, walls, an ancient well and traces of fortification have been found in the area of the tower. The village seems to have been inhabited in Byzantine times.[3] It was built on the Palaiostrata, the road that connected Kymi with Chalkida, and it is possible that there were tolls in the village. At the end of the 14th and the beginning of the 15th century, a fortified tower was built in the village, which survives to this day.[4] The village is mentioned in an Ottoman tax register of 1474 under the name Trahili. According to the register, it had 55 houses and belonged to the nahiye of Monodryos.[5]
In 1835, Trachili was annexed to the municipality of Taminaion and in 1841 to the municipality of Dystia (which was later renamed to Taminaion). With the abolition of municipalities in 1912, Trahili was designated as the seat of the homonymous community. With the Kapodistrias plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Taminaion and with the Kallikratis plan, it was annexed to the municipality of Kymi-Aliveri.[6]

The medieval tower in Trachili
In a prominent position in the village is a tall square Venetian tower, built around 1400. The tower is approximately 22 meters high and has base dimensions of 7.4 by 7.6 meters. From the top it has a panoramic view of the Aegean Sea and the southern Euboean Gulf. The lower floor has only small arms slots, while the windows are on the middle and upper floors. The entrance was on the south side and was accessible by a hanging ladder.[4]
