Sempronas (Σέμπρωνας ) Chania

Sempronas is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the municipality of Platanias in the regional unit of Chania, Crete. It belonged to the Kydonia District. It is 38 kilometers from Chania and is built at an altitude of 620 m.[1] on a small plateau with about 80 water sources. Its economy is mainly agricultural, with the main products being chestnuts, olive oil, dairy products, honey, apples and wine.[2]

Historical information

In the Prasiana area, within a farm, a built cist tomb from the early Christian period has been excavated. Bone remains and a clay oinochoe were found inside.[3]

The village is mentioned by Francesco Barocci in 1577 as Semprona, in the province of Kissamos. In the Venetian census of 1583 by Castrofilakas it is mentioned as Gavumera Sembrino with 142 inhabitants and Francesco Basilicata in 1630 mentions the village as Sembrona in the province of Kissamos. On the contrary, in the chronicle of Antonio Trivan it is mentioned that it was under the province of Kydonia. It is possible that the settlement was located on the border of the two provinces and its administrative affiliation changed.[1]

In the Egyptian census of 1834 it is mentioned as Sempronas. In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Lakka and according to the census it had a mixed population, with 69 Christian and 70 Muslim inhabitants. In the census of 1900 it had 102 inhabitants and was under the same municipality. In 1920 it belonged to the rural municipality of Nea Roumata.[1] In 1925 the village was annexed to the commune of Prase, but in 1930 it was designated as the seat of the homonymous commune until the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when it was incorporated into the then municipality of Mousoura.[4] In 2011 it was incorporated again as a commune into the new municipality of Platanias.

Points of interest

The central church of the village is dedicated to Saint George. It was built in 1910.[2] The village also has the single-nave church of Saint John, probably from the Venetian period. Inside the church, frescoes in poor condition have survived.[5] At the top of the Apopigadi hill is a church dedicated to Saint John, built in 1873. It celebrates the Nativity of the Baptist. Near this church is the source Gitemeni vrysi.[2]
