Polyneri (Πολυνέριον) Trikala

Polyneri is a settlement in Thessaly and the Regional Unit of Trikala.[2][3]

General information

Polyneri is located towards the borders with the Regional Unit of Karditsa and the Regional Unit of Arta, on the southeastern slopes of Mount Hatzi at an altitude of 780 meters.[2] It is approximately 73 km. W.-S.W. from Trikala, 75 km. NE. from Arta and 53 km. W.-S.W. from Pyli (seat of the municipality).

The old name of the village is Kothoni[4] and is first mentioned in a document in favor of the Bishopric of Stagion in 1393. The name, according to one view, is due to a proper name ("of Kothoni"), which is related to a second view that associates the name with the ancient Greek word "κόθων" meaning clay vessel, cup, glass. In the area there are finds from the ancient, pre-Christian and post-Byzantine eras. To the south is the church of Agios Nikolaos and to the northeast of the Metamorfosi tou Sotiros with some remarkable frescoes. To the southeast there are also the ruins of two watermills (one communal and one private) made of mantania and dristeles.[3]

A Folklore Museum[5] operates in Polyneri,[6] while a declarant championship[7] is organized in early June, and every July, at the "Gortzia" location, the village's cultural association organizes a gathering of Polynerites from all over the world with various events.[8]

It is officially mentioned, after the Union of Thessaly in 1883 in the Official Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883, with its old name from the Turkish occupation as Kothoni, being annexed to the then municipality of Kothonia.
