Piso Meria (Πίσω Μεριά) Andros
Piso Meria is a settlement in Andros and the Cyclades.[2]
General information
Piso Meria is located on its southwestern tip at an altitude of 200 meters.[3] It is approximately 34 km. SE. from Gavrio (the island's port), 24 km. S. from Chora (seat of the municipality - via Pitrofos) and 6 km. SW. from Ormos Korthiou. The village includes the settlement of Pyrgoi and on the slope behind the church of Agia Paraskevi are its old watermills. On its plateaus, there are water tanks for watering the orchards and gardens (the locals call them "chavouzes").[4] It is the birthplace of the benefactor Petros Leonardos Moustakas.
Panagia Tromarchiani
An old monastery located 4 km southwest of the village and built on a steep slope bare of vegetation, two kilometers from the Andros-Tino Strait. It is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is celebrated twice a year (August 15th and Monday of Diakainisimo). The old catholicon (current church) is a basilica with a fairly large and impressive ceiling, marble floor and a masterpiece tall wooden carved iconostasis of the 19th century. The monastery was founded in the Byzantine era and was the property of the Truumarchis of the area (Byzantine military commander).[5]
Administrative information
It is officially mentioned, after the Ottoman occupation, written as Opiso Meria in 1835 to be annexed to the then municipality of Korthi.[6] According to the Kallikrates plan and its amendment by Cleisthenes I, it belongs to the community of Korthi[7] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Ydrousa of the Municipality of Andros, while according to the 2021 census it has 242 inhabitants[8].
