Petres (Πέτραι) Florina
Petres is a mountainous village in Western Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Florina[1].
Geographical - historical information
Petres is located at the foot of Mount Leleki at an altitude of 590 meters and on the western shores of the homonymous lake[2]. It is 5 kilometers north of Amyntaio. The village's climate is continental and most of the village's residents are engaged in agriculture (growing vines, onions), livestock and fishing.[3]
The village was founded in the Roman era and on the slopes of the "Gratista" hill a Hellenistic settlement has been discovered, occupying an area of approximately 20 hectares. The area has been declared an archaeological site since 1984.[4] During the Turkish occupation it was known as "Petriskos" and according to the Turkish census of 1481, there were a total of 67 families living there, with cereals being the most important product of the village[3].
The area around Lake Petres and the village has been designated as a Landscape of Outstanding Natural Beauty (LNA)[5] and a habitat for approximately 130 species of rare birds such as the wagtail, the little goose and the golden eagle, which is why it is a Natura 2000 habitat[3].
Administrative
It was officially mentioned as a settlement after the liberation in 1918 under the name Peterskon in Government Gazette 259A - 29/12/1918, designating it as the seat of the homonymous community. In 1926, with Government Gazette 346A - 04/10/1926, it was renamed Petres.[6] According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Petres, which belongs to the municipal unit of Amyntaio of the Municipality of Amyntaio and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 312 inhabitants[7], while in the 2001 census it had a population of 445 inhabitants.
