Historical information
Rentina Karditsa Holy Monastery of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary.

The Monastery of Rentina, according to tradition, was founded in the 9th-10th century, but no remains of its former premises survive. It was renovated, according to a surviving inscription, in 1579, while the current catholicon was built in 1640 at the expense of the noble family of Stavoggini or Stravoenoglou from Smokovo.[4] It is a temple of the Athonite style, decorated with frescoes from 1662, while those of the narthex date back to 1676. The frescoes of the northern chapel date back to 1743.[3] During the period of Turkish rule, the Monastery experienced a particularly great flourishing, it had many monks and metochia, even in Russia, which is why the locals called it "the Russian". It had important relics, sacred vessels and icons, many of which were lost, while the remaining ones are exhibited in the ecclesiastical museum of Rentina. It was known for its rich library and the illustrated manuscripts it preserved.[1] Since the 18th century, it has hosted a higher school of letters (an evolution of the Hidden School) which, according to local tradition, operated in an underground crypt of a chapel.
