Origin of name

According to tradition, it took its name from Antiquity, where those who went to the Oracle of Delphi were forced to spend the night here, where there were the "marioles" who were the sacred common women, who learned the secrets of the visitors and conveyed them to the Oracle. Another version of the name is from the Panagia "Mariolatra" of the area.[5]

Ancient Boion

The area has been inhabited since ancient times, the city was called Boion and belonged to the Doric Tetrapolis. Later it was called Charadra and in modern times it was moved to the point where today's Mariolata is located.[6]
