Kampos (Κάμπος) Ikaria
Kampos or Kampos Frantatou is a settlement of Ikaria and the Regional Unit of Ikaria.[2]
Geographical - Historical information
Kampos is located in the central part of the island and on its northern coast at a distance of approximately 33 km (guideline) from Agios Kirykos and 2 km west of Evdilos. The village is built at an altitude of 43 meters[3], in a small fertile plain with plenty of water while in its area are the ruins of the ancient capital of the island, Oinoi. Its beach is one of the largest on the island, sandy and with relatively shallow waters.[4]
The archaeological site is at its eastern end[5] with its core the Odeon, the late Roman aqueduct and an early Byzantine secular building named "Palatia".[6] A neoclassical building built in 1939 with voluntary work by residents of Kampos and financial assistance from Ikarians from America and Australia houses finds from northern Ikaria.[7]
Administrative - Population data
After the integration of Ikaria with Greece, it was officially mentioned in 1918 in the Government Gazette 204A - 21/09/1918 that it was annexed to the then community of Frantato.[8] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, it belongs to the community of Frantato, which falls under the municipal unit of Evdilos of the Municipality of Evdilos and according to the 2011 census, there are 223 residents.[9]
