Kalyvia (Καλύβια) Larissa
Kalyvia is a settlement in Thessaly in the Regional Unit of Larissa.[1][2]
Geographical information
Kalyvia is located on the southern slopes of Mount Olympus at an altitude of 600 meters[3] while it is approximately 20 km. N.-NE. from Elassona (seat of the municipality) and 56 km. NW. from Larissa (via Tyrnavos). North of the village is Pythio, west of Asprochoma and south of Skopia. The village was founded by cattle breeders of Kokkinopilos during the Ottoman occupation and its inhabitants are engaged in agriculture and livestock farming.[2][4]
Near and east of Kalyvia, at the peak of Tourkofolia (altitude 1,233 meters), there is an organized take-off track for hang gliders and paragliders, which serves as a pole of attraction for visitors and athletes from many countries of the world.[2] The mountaineering club of Kalyvia, founded in 1993, has built an emergency shelter at the location "Christakis" after a route of approximately 20 km. of rural road.[5]
Administrative - population data
It is officially mentioned for the first time as a separate settlement in 1940, being registered in the then community of Kokkinopilos. In 1977, with the Government Gazette 14A - 15/01/1977, it was designated the seat of the community of Kokkinopilos. According to the Kallikratis program, together with Kokkinopilos, they form the community of Kokkinopilos, which falls under the Municipal Unit of Olympus of the Municipality of Elassona and according to the 2011 census has 467 residents.[6] The course of the population according to the censuses:
