History

It is assumed that the Kalogiroi are specifically related to the kingdom of the Aethicians, the ancient Potnaio. This view is based on archaeological findings and in particular on the ruins of the Hellenistic castle at the site of Paleokastro, the ancient cemetery and the tombstone of Echenikos, dating from the 4th century BC. Broken vases, tiles, statuettes, coins as well as two tombs of different depths and shapes were also found.

The village was moved to its current location in recent years from the area of Agia Triada which was prone to landslides. During the long history of the place, the residents were often forced to hide in the nearby natural shelter at the top of Neraida, but also to migrate, which happened when the Turks burned it down and many settled in the area of Agia.

Kalogiroi also combines its name with ecclesiastical history since it was the homeland of the abbot of the Monastery of Dousikos Ierotheos (1793-1819 & 1822-1823) while I. Papasotiriou read in 1937 in an anthology of St. Nikolaos, a memorial relating to the passage through Kalogiroi of Kosmas of Aetolia in 1777.

Culture Elements

The name given to the Municipality is not accidental since the location "Palaeokastro" confirms the existence of the Aethican kingdom in the 4th century BC. Between Kalogiroi and Agios Prokopios is the city of Poitneo or Potneo, which flourished from the 5th century BC until Roman times.

The relief tombstone of Echenikos, a warrior or official who was killed in battle in the 4th century BC, probably came from here, which fell victim to antiquities smugglers and after many adventures was found and is today kept in the Archaeological Museum of Larissa.
Archaeological sites

Traces of a ruined castle from the Hellenistic-Roman era confirm the information of ancient authors that the area of Kalogiroi was located on the borders of ancient Poitneo or Potnaio, a kingdom of the Aethic people during the 4th century BC until Roman times.
The Paleokastro, at the top of Neraida, is a natural fortress where spears, shields, a type of seal from the era, etc. have been found.
In the area of Agia Triada, the tombs found indicate the existence of an ancient cemetery from the Hellenistic-Roman era. A section of a wall with huge boulders is also preserved.
The tombstone presents Echenikos.

History of Echenikos

Echenikos was a soldier originally from the village of Kalogiroi and had been killed in battle. The relief depicts Echenikos, girded with a tunic, a chlamys, a Thessalian petassos (flat-headed) slung over his shoulder and with slippers on his feet. In his left hand he holds two poles while with his right he strokes the hair of a small child (probably his child), who is also wearing a tunic and holding a small bird in his hand. On the left side of the tombstone we observe the inscription “SAMA WOMEN AND CHILDREN EPESTESISAN ECHENIKO EI TIS KEN A.DA KEIMENO ESTI HARIS”, that is to say “his wife and children erected this stele on the grave of Echenikos, in the hope of giving him something good in Hades, if that is possible”. The stele is made of white Thessalian marble with light shades of blue, while a colored anthemion adorns its crown and dates back to the 4th century BC. It was found in March 1919 in a field below the church of Agia Triada by a farmer, Stathis Athanasios. The area is thought to have been an ancient cemetery. The stele was locked up for years in the church's courtyard, was stolen in recent years and sold to a gallery in Germany. The art lover who bought it had the sensitivity to return it to the Greek state when he learned that it had been stolen. The original tombstone is in the warehouses of the archaeological museum under construction in Larissa, broken in half. An exact copy was placed in the village square.
