South Athens

Elliniko (Greek: Ελληνικό, meaning "Greek") is a suburb of Athens, Greece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Elliniko-Argyroupoli, of which it is a municipal unit.[1]

It is the home of the Ellinikon International Airport, now replaced by Eleftherios Venizelos. One third of the municipal unit is covered by the airport site. The Elliniko Olympic Complex included the Olympic Canoe/Kayak Slalom Centre, the Olympic Hockey Centre, the Baseball Centre and Softball stadium.

Much of the residential area is in the eastern part of Elliniko, while the western part is smaller. A local controversy surrounds a new stadium to be built for Panathinaikos, as many favour the Goudi team instead. Forested land dominates around the beach and the areas has some nightclubs; the area is located near the quarter of Agios Kosmas.

Recent developments

Prices of residences have risen in recent years. This is due to several reasons: Elliniko is not only well connected to the centre of Athens through the new line of the Athens metro, but the biggest park in Attica is to be formed at the former terrain of the Elliniko Airport.
Economy

Hellenic Imperial Airways has its head office in Elliniko.[2]
Government and infastructure

The Greek Civil Aviation Authority has its head office in Elliniko.[3]
