Arfara (Αρφαρά) Messinia
Arfara is a settlement and seat of the homonymous local community, of the Regional Unit of Messinia, in the Peloponnese Region, with a population of 1,150 inhabitants, according to the 2011 Census.[2] Administratively, they belong to the Arfara community and are part of the Arfara municipal unit of the Municipality of Kalamata.[3]
Location
Arfara is located at an altitude of 100 meters,[4] at the foot of Mount Syrroka and is 18 kilometers from Kalamata. It is surrounded by olive groves, fig trees and fruit trees.
It has regular transportation by buses of the K.T.E.L. of Messinia.[5]
It was served by rail, from the railway station in Platy to Kalamata and Athens.[6]
Churches
In 1870, the Parish Church of Saints Theodoros was founded and completed in 1879. The old parish church of Saints Basil was built during the relocation of the inhabitants of Ano Arfaras in 1838, as evidenced by a stone slab, which is built into the window of the sanctuary of the church.
Prophet Elias was built on a hill, south of Arfaras and provides a view of the Messinian plain and the mountains of Southwest Messinia. A nunnery operated here from 1999 to 2008.[7]
Administrative changes
21-04-1835, the settlement of Arfaras[8] is annexed to the Municipality of Amfea.[9]
29-08-1855,[10] the settlement of Arfara is designated as the summer seat of the Municipality of Amfea.
07-02-1876,[11] the settlement of Arfara is designated as the seat of the Municipality of Amfea.
31-08-1912,[12] the settlement of Arfara is detached from the Municipality of Amfea and is designated as the seat of the Community of Arfara.[13]
04-12-1997,[14] the settlement of Arfara is detached from the Community of Arfara and is designated as the seat of a Municipality (Municipality of Arfara).[15]
07-06-2010,[16] the settlement of Arfara is detached from the Municipality of Arfara and is annexed to the Municipality of Kalamata.[17]
Local community
The local community of Arfara is classified as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of 23.811 km² (2011). It also includes the settlements of Agios Konstantinos and Ano Arfara. [18]

Sports
Asteras Arfaron
The village's football team is called Asteras Arfaron.[24] It plays at the Arfaras Municipal Stadium.[25] It has participated in the Fourth National Division in the 2005–06, 2006–07 and 2007–08 seasons.[26]
