Apovathra (Αποβάθρα) Kavala
The Apovathra or Eleftheron is a small seaside settlement in Nea Iraklitsa in the prefecture of Kavala. According to the 2011 census, its population is 45 residents[1].
General information
Apovathra is located in the Eleftheron bay next to the old port of Nea Peramos. It is 17 km. SW. from the city of Kavala, 2.5 km. NE. from Nea Peramos and 2 km. south of Nea Iraklitsa. The bay is a designated Natura 2000 area and is a protected sandy coast with shallow waters, rich algae flora on small stones and the presence of Nolt's Zostera (Zostera noltii) and extensive Posidonia beds (Posidonia) up to a depth of 30 meters[2][3].
It was first officially mentioned as a settlement in 1991 with 14 residents[4], annexed to the then community of Nea Iraklitsa[5] of the province of Paggaio[4]. In 1997 it was subordinated to the municipality of Eleftheron[4], while according to the Kallikratis program it belongs to the local community of Nea Iraklitsa of the municipality of Paggaio.
