Alpochori (Αλποχώρι) Fokida
Alpochori (formerly Alpochorion or Alepochorion [1] Doridos) is a settlement in Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Fokida.
General information
Alpochori is located in the former prefecture of Fokida at an altitude of 990 meters in Xerovouni of Vardoussia. It was a municipal district of the municipality of Vardoussia and in 2011 had 36 residents.[2] The village is located in a fir forest and there are many springs and streams. A traditional municipal guesthouse operates in the village. The village's watermill has been designated a monument[3].
Historical information
According to one version [4] the village was founded by the persecuted by the Turks residents of the village of Alpochori Souli in the 18th century.
According to another version [5] it was named after Ali.
A third version is that it was named after the many foxes[6].
From 1869 to 1912 it was part of the Municipality of Krokylio [7]. From 1912 until the implementation of the Kapodistrias plan in 1997, it was an independent community.
In the mid-20th century it had 350 residents, while today about 15-20 remain there all year round[8].
