Geography
Island

The islet of Agios Achilleios is located in the northwestern part of Mikri Prespa in a shallow and marshy position of the lake. The islet is located - like the entire lake area - at a high altitude approaching 900 meters, on average. In the southern part there is a peak that reaches 925 meters, the highest point of the islet. It is connected by a 650 m long floating bridge connecting Agios Achilleios with the opposite bank.[4] Its name, like that of the settlement, comes from Agios Achilleios the Cappadocian (note: the spelling is preserved), bishop of Larissa, in the 4th century.[5] Together with the island of Ioannina, it is the second inhabited island in a lake in Greece.[6][7][8][9]

Settlement

Agios Achilleios is a settlement in the northern part of the homonymous islet of Mikri Prespa, at an average elevation of 860. It is located approximately 59 km W. of Florina. The local community is characterized as a rural mountainous settlement, with an area of 38.848 km² (2011).[6][7][8][9][10][11]

Sights

The Basilica of Agios Achillios, a ruined Byzantine church of the 10th-11th century, built on the site of a larger early Christian church of the 6th century. The church was plundered and destroyed by the Alamanni around 1045 and both the sources and the archaeological research show that it was subsequently renovated by the active bishop of Ohrid, Theophrastus, who organized Episcopal and Hierarchical Synods there. It is assumed that the relic of Saint Achilles was placed in the diacanion of the church and that the Bulgarian Tsar Samuel, who occupied the area for about 15 years, was buried in the right aisle. The basilica is one of the largest of its category with dimensions of 22 X 45m. It is three-aisled, wooden-roofed, with a narthex, with two tall columns carrying two rows of arches. It is built at the base of a small hill, with incorporated building material, from buildings of an ancient city (possibly Lyka, a Roman/Byzantine settlement, as excavated inscriptions attest), as has happened with the other churches of the islet.[15][16]
The Basilica of the Twelve Apostles, a ruined church from the 11th century
The monastery of Panagia Porphyra, at the southeastern end of the islet, which preserves frescoes from the 15th, 16th and 18th centuries in its catholicon
The church of Agios Demetrios (14th century)
The church of Agios Georgios, a small single-aisled basilica from the 15th century that preserves its frescoes[7][8][17]
