Aetorrachi (Αετορράχη ) Larissa
Aetorrachi is a village in the municipal community of Elassona, in the municipality of the same name in the prefecture of Larissa. According to the 2011 census, its population is 77 permanent residents[1].
General information
The settlement is built on the plain of Elassona at an altitude of 340 meters[2], at the foot of a series of hills on the southern side of Mount Olympus. It is six kilometers from Elassona, to whose municipality it administratively belongs. The central church is dedicated to Saints Anargyri and was built in 1976. The village also has the chapels of Saints George and Saint Nicholas[3]. Two caves are located nearby, which, although unexploited, have been characterized as landscapes of particular natural beauty[4].
History
Aetorrachi was created in 1923 by Pontic refugees (78 people in total) who fled to Greece after the Asia Minor Catastrophe. It was built on the ruins of the village of Velesnikos, abandoned since the early 19th century[5], a name that was maintained until 1961 when the settlement received its current name[2][3].
After its desolation, the original settlement was converted into a manor house of an Ottoman family from Elassona, while its lands were rented from time to time to nomadic herders. Shortly after the Asia Minor Catastrophe, the area was granted by the Refugee Rehabilitation Committee to refugee families from Pontus. Later, some Vlach-speaking families from the Chasia region also settled in the village[5].
Administratively, Aetorrachi was initially a settlement of the Tsaritsani community. Until 1997, it was part of the Elassona province as a community of the homonymous municipality, in which it remained despite the administrative changes imposed on the local government through the Kapodistrias[2] and Kallikrates[1] programs.
Culture
Aetorrachi has a Cultural Center, which was founded in 1986 and completed thanks to contributions from the village residents as well as institutions and organizations such as the Church of Greece, the Ministry of Culture and the local municipal and prefectural authorities. The building has a 400 sq.m. multi-purpose hall, a lending library, the offices of the local cultural association, etc. It is used for theatrical performances, concerts, dances, lectures and other intellectual and social events[6].
