Nomophylaces,

(Nomophylakes, νομοφύλακες, “Guardians of the Laws”). A board found in different States of Greece, which had to see to the observance of the requirements of the law, especially in the deliberative assemblies. At Athens, after the abolition of the Areopagus as a board of supervision (about 461 BC), a body of seven nomophylaces was introduced as a check upon the Senate, the public assembly, and the magistrates. They also provide for the safe custody of the laws and public archives (C. I. G. 3794). At Sparta the number of monophylaces was five.
