Androsthenes of Thasos (4th c. BC), geographer who participated in the expedition of Alexander the Great in Asia. With Nearchus he explored the eastern coast of Arabia until the death of Alexander.

Androsthenes was the lucky one who … discovered for the first time the important fact that plants are capable of movement, a characteristic previously attributed only to the animal world. Like all scientifi c observations which were ordered by Alexander the Great himself, the description of the daily periodic [italics Bretzl’s] movements of the leafl ets in their four stages is written so clearly and so succinctly that until the time of our new physiological works, it remains the best (description) of the sleep of plants, even if they are not noted and forgotten, as a historical review will describe.
