The Apple of Discord was a golden apple inscribed with the words, To the most Beautiful, thrown, by the Olympic goddess Eris, as revenge for not having been invited. She threw it amongst Hera, Athena, and Aphrodite, who, after not being able to agree amongst themselves, eventually allowed Paris of Troy to act as a contest judge. He chose Aphrodite, who had offered him in return the most beautiful woman of the world for a wife. The woman was Helen, and his claiming of her began the Trojan War.
