2723 : Herakles. Votive relief. Marble

Copyright ©. Photo : www.hellenicaworld.com

Found in second use, built into the church of Agios Dimitrios at Marousi,
Attica. In the middle of the relief is a tetrastyle building with an epistyle,
rendered in perspective. Herakles stands at the left holding his club and a
bowl. He is approached by two worshippers; the first is a nude youth with
his chlamys hanging over his left shoulder and an aged man, probably his father,
making a gesture of veneration. The building links the relief with
the chthonic cult of Herakles as Alexikakos in the Athenian deme
of Melite (near modern Thiseion Square).
Middle of the 4th cent. B.C.
