Zizanio (Ζιζάνι) Messinia
Zizanio[4] or Zizani, officially referred to as Zizanion, is a semi-mountainous settlement near Koroni and administratively falls under the Municipality of Pylos - Nestor, of the Regional Unit of Messinia.
Location
Zizani is located northwest of Koroni, from which it is approximately 23.5 kilometers away, and southeast of Pylos, from which it is approximately 27.5 kilometers away. It has an altitude of 232[1] meters and is approximately 8 kilometers from the sea. Near Zizani are Kaplani, to the south at a distance of less than 3 kilometers, Yameia at a distance of approximately 5 kilometers, and Grizokampos to the southwest at a distance of approximately 6 kilometers, respectively.
History
The village area has a long history that follows the history of Messinia and the wider region of Koroni and Pylia. In antiquity, it was under the control of Asini, the ancient city, which later developed into modern Koroni. The village is mentioned in various sources, at least from the early years of the establishment of the modern Greek state, under the name Zizani.
Administrative history
Zizani or Zizanion[5] was annexed, in 1845,[6] to the old Municipality of Koloni,[7] with its seat in Koroni, where it remained, until 1912, when this municipality was abolished. At least from 1844 to 1889 the village was officially referred to as Zizani, while from 1889 to 1896 as Zizanion. From 1896 to 1940 it was again referred to as Zizani and from 1940 to the present day as Zizanion. The village is also referred to in 1853 as Zizani in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis, as a village in the Municipality of Kolonidon, Pylia District, with a population of 52 inhabitants, based on the 1851 census.[8] In 1912[9] the village was annexed to the Community of Kaplani,[10] with its seat in Kaplani. The same community also includes the settlements of Valtsouka (today Exochikon), Grizi (today Akritohorion) and Tsaizi (today Yameia). Zizanion remained a settlement of the Community of Kaplani from 1912 to 1997, when then, within the framework of the changes that occurred in the local government, through the "Kapodistrias" plan, Zizanion was subordinated to the abolished Municipality of Koroni,[11][12] with headquarters in Koroni, until 2010. Since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, Zizanion now belongs to the new Municipality of Pylos - Nestor.[13][14] This municipality was established with the Kallikratis Program with the merger of the pre-existing municipalities of Koroni, Methoni, Papaflessa, Pylos, Nestor and Chiliochoria. Zizanion today is a settlement of the Community of Kaplani, Municipality of Pylos-Nestor,[4] which also includes the settlements of Exochikon and Kaplani (seat).
Residents
The settlement, based on the 2011 census, has 56 permanent residents, who are mainly engaged in traditional agricultural crops, the production of olive oil and raisins.

Buildings – events – sights
In addition to the traditional houses, there is the old Primary School, which first operated in 1905[30] and the Holy Church of the Holy Trinity, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Messinia. Various events and cultural events are organized by the Association of Apantachos Zizanaion. Important sights of the area are the Paliokastro, but also the Mycenaean vaulted tombs at the location of Vigla, between the village and Kaplani.
