Zinta (Ζίντα) Heraklion

Zinta is a settlement in the community of Arkalochori, in the Municipality of Minoa Pediada[1] of the Prefecture of Heraklion in the District of Monofatsi. In 2011, it had 116 inhabitants,[2] who are engaged in agriculture. Its location is on the edge of a hill whose eastern steep slope makes it dominate the fertile plain that stretches to the east and south of the village[3].

At km 25.5 of the Heraklion - Arkalochori road, after the village of Alagni, there is a junction that leads to Zinta, via Patsideros. From Arkalochori one can access Zinta from the junction of Choumeri. Around the village there is a non-visitable cave. At the bottom of the settlement, towards Miliarisi, there is a spring. It is 31 kilometers from Heraklion (located south of the city).

The village is mentioned in censuses from the late 14th century. In the settlement there is the church of Agios Nikolaos and the church of Agios Chrysostomos of Smyrna, which was inaugurated in 2015 and is the first church in Crete in his memory[4].

Zinta is famous for its olive trees (trees) that are everywhere you look. This is considered a very good sign for a place. Also, an average of 94% of elderly people live there who are willing, kind and cheerful.

Animals

The animals in this village are many but harmless. Some of the animal species of Zinta are the following: reptiles, birds, insects as they have been spotted by residents, even crabs! The crabs come in the summer from the so-called Kato Vrysi, which is south of the village. This particular fountain has recently been renovated by the Zinta cultural association.

The churches

The churches of Zinta are about ten wonderful and well-kept churches of Agios Nikolaos the patron, Agios Georgios, Agios Charalambos and Chrysostomos and others. A characteristically special and amazing church is that of Agios Prokopios and it is the only church of Agios Prokopios in all of Crete! It is in the courtyard of a fairly spacious house where wherever you look you see wonderful colorful flowers that make this enviable landscape even more beautiful.
