Zevgaraki (Ζευγαράκι ) Aitoloakarnania

Zevgaraki, officially Zevgarakion, is a lowland village in the Aitoloakarnania Regional Unit with an altitude of 30 meters[2].

Geography - History

Zevgaraki is located SE. of Lake Lysimachia and SW. of Trichonida. It is 11.5 km. S. from Agrinio and 27.5 km. N. from Messolonghi. It is built next to the Antirrio - Agrinio National Road and the "Sikia junction". The village was founded by residents who moved from Ano Zevgaraki shortly before 1940 who moved to the area for better access to their estates. To the north of the village and towards the irrigation canal that connects Lysimachia and Trichonida are the "bridges of Alameis", a stone road bridge with arches 3 km long.[3] Their name is due to the Kareli Ala Bey of the region during the period of Turkish rule who built them in the 18th century. to facilitate transportation in the then marshy terrain. The travelers Lick and Pukeville report on them. According to another view, their construction at that time was based on a pre-existing one from earlier years[4]. Since 1968 they have been declared a historical monument[5].

Administrative

Zevgaraki is officially mentioned in 1835 in the Official Gazette 19A - 07/12/1835 to be annexed to the then municipality of Kerasia. In 1912 with the Official Gazette 261A - 31/08/1912 it is designated as the seat of the newly founded homonymous community[6]. According to the Kallikratis program, together with Ano Zevgaraki and Kamaretsaiika, they form the local community of Zevgaraki, which falls under the municipal unit of Arakynthos in the municipality of Agrinio. According to the 2011 census, as a community it has a population of 862 residents, while as a settlement it has 781[7].

Note

In the municipality of Agrinio there is the synonymous settlement of Zevgaraki of Panitoliko.
