Zarkadia (Ζαρκαδιά) Kavala

Zarkadia (until 1926 Karatzilar[1]) is a village in the municipality of Nestos in the regional unit of Kavala, in the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace. The municipal community of Zarkadia, which also includes the settlement of Ekali, according to the 2021 census, had 596 permanent residents, down from 671 in 2021.

General and historical data

It is located northeast of Kavala at an altitude of 140 meters.[2] Zarkadia had a Muslim population in the early 20th century and according to Greek army data in 1911 it had 460 residents.[3] Following the population exchange between Greece and Turkey, 188 families of Greek refugees[4], mainly from Eastern Thrace, settled in Zarkadia.[5]

During the Bulgarian Occupation, Zarkadia was one of the many ELAS supply centers in the southwest of the Lekani mountain range.[6] On June 6, 1944, a clash occurred near the village between a small group of ELAS guerrillas and a Bulgarian gendarmerie unit.[7]

Administratively, after its incorporation into the Greek state, Zarkadia was until 1997 the seat of the homonymous community in the province of Nestos. Based on the changes of the Kapodistrias program, it was incorporated into the municipality of Chrysoupoleos[8], while since 2011 it has been part of the Kallikratian municipality of Nestos.

A resident of Zarkadia was Nikos Hatzinikolaou[9] or Captain Mavros, an important figure in the ELAS and DSE, who after the end of the Civil War fled to Poland where he lived until his death.
