Ypsilokastro (Υψηλόκαστρο ) Drama
Ypsilokastro is a semi-mountainous village in Eastern Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Drama.[1]
Geography - History
Ypsilokastro is located at the southeastern foothills of Mount Megalovouni (or Kotza or Kotza Dag) at an altitude of 260 meters[2]. It is 26 km. SW. from Paranesti (seat of the municipality) and 18 km. E.-NE. from Drama. Its name, during the period of Turkish rule, was Malkalar or Kelli Malkalar and its Muslim inhabitants, after the Asia Minor catastrophe and the Greek-Turkish population exchange of 1923, moved to Turkey while 40 refugee families (152 people) came and settled in the village.[3] Thus, after the liberation, in 1919, in the Government Gazette 251A - 20/11/1919, it was annexed to the then community of Nousratli (now Nikiforou). In 1927, with the Government Gazette 76A - 02/05/1927, it was renamed Psilokastron. and in 1940 the name was corrected to Ypsilokastron.[4] According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Ano Pyxari, Gyros and Teichos, it constitutes the local community of Ano Pyxari, which falls under the municipal unit of Nikiforou of the Municipality of Paranesti and according to the 2011 census has a population of 38 residents.[5]
