Ypsili Rachi (Υψηλή Ράχη) Drama

Ypsili Rachi (more commonly known as Psili Rachi) is a settlement in Eastern Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Drama.[1]

General information

Ypsili Rachi is located near the Lykodiaselo stream at an altitude of 440 meters.[1] It is approximately 23 km W-SW from Paranesti (the seat of the municipality), 25 km E-NE from Drama and 72 km W-NW from Xanthi. It was inhabited by refugees mainly from Pontus and Asia Minor after the Asia Minor catastrophe and the exchange of populations in 1922.

The occupations of the remaining residents are animal husbandry and to a lesser extent agriculture, due to the morphology of the terrain, which is mountainous and without the possibility of extensive irrigation. The Bulgarian occupation of 1941-44 and later the Civil War were difficult periods for the village, but even later most of the inhabitants took the path of refuge (Germany, USA, Australia, Sweden, etc.) in the 1960s due to lack of work and in search of a better fate, of which very few have returned to this day.

It is officially mentioned, after the liberation, as Zarits in 1919 in the Official Gazette 251A - 20/11/1919, being annexed to the then community of Nusratli (Nikiforos). In 1926 with the Official Gazette 405A - 15/11/1926 it was renamed to Ypsili Rachi and was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[2] According to the Kallikrates Plan and its amendment Kleisthenis I, it is a homonymous community[3] belonging to the Municipal Unit of Nikiforos of the Municipality of Paranesti. In the 2021 census, it has a population of 123 residents[4] while in the 2011 census it had 215[5].
