Ypsila (Υψηλά) Andros
Ypsila[1] (or Ypsilou)[2] is a village in Andros.
Location
It has an altitude of 220 meters[3] and a population of 60 inhabitants (2021 census)[4].
It is 5 kilometers from Chora and about 25 kilometers from Gavrio.
It is located on a slope of Mount Petalos on the mountain peak of Stavros.
Archaeological
The ancient city of Ypsila is located in Aprovatou and was discovered in the early 1980s.[5] The excavations revealed a temple in the center of the acropolis, buildings and part of the wall, and movable finds. The sanctuary (probably of the goddess Demeter) was founded in the 8th century BC and functioned until the second quarter of the 5th century BC.
It is one of the most important fortified settlements of the early Iron Age in the South Aegean.
Administrative
In 1835, the settlement of Ypsila was annexed to the municipality of Andros.[6] In 1912, it was detached from the municipality and annexed to the community of Lamyra and is now referred to as "(the) Ypsila".[6]
During the administrative division until 2010 with the "Kapodistrias" plan, Ypsila belonged to the Lamyra Local Department of the former Municipality of Andros.
It now belongs to the municipal unit of Andros in the South Aegean Region, according to the Kallikrates Program.
