Xyloparoiko (Ξυλοπάροικο) Trikala

Xyloparoiko is a settlement in Thessaly in the Trikala Regional Unit.[2][3]
Geographical - historical information

Xyloparoiko is located at the eastern foot of Mount Koziakas (Kerketio) at an altitude of 420 meters[2] and is approximately 21 km west of Trikala. North of the village is Gorgogyri and southeast is Pialeia. It is mentioned from the period of the Turkish occupation and was first inhabited in the 19th century by loggers who migrated mainly from Macedonia (Kastoria). Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in livestock farming, while the village is famous for its builders.[4][5]

A characteristic of the area is the abundance of water and the existence of 27 dristelas, i.e. watermills that are still in operation. In Xyloparoiko there is a folklore museum with exhibits related to local tradition.[6] Every year, on New Year's Day, the residents observe the traditional custom of the villages of Koziakas, the "karkatzalia" (goblin-making).[7]
Administrative - population data

It is officially mentioned after the Union of Thessaly, in 1883 in the Government Gazette 126A - 02/04/1883, as being annexed to the then municipality of Pialia.[8] According to the Kallikratis program, together with Kori, they form the homonymous community[9] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Koziakas of the Municipality of Trikala and according to the 2011 census, 238 residents were registered.[10] The population trend, according to the censuses is:
