Xino Nero (Ξινό Νερό) Florina
Xino Nero is a settlement in Western Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Florina.[1][2]
General information
Xino Nero is located southwest of Lake Petron at an altitude of 650 meters[3] and is approximately 34 kilometers southeast of Florina and 5 west of Amyntaio. Formerly known as Eksi Sou[4] as well as Ano Verbiani, it is one of the main villages of Florina and is known for the natural mineral water springs (cold hydrocarbons) that exist in the area and which are curative for chronic diarrhea, constipation, arthritis and urinary tract diseases[1]. The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and livestock farming.
Carbonated Sour Water
The natural mineral water is bottled and marketed by the "Pure Municipal Enterprise and Industrial Sour Water", which is responsible for the production, bottling and marketing of it as well as soft drinks.[5] The water from the Sour Water is bottled in the automatic bottling plant that has been operating since 1958. This pleasant acidic property and the presence of calcium and magnesium salts in normal proportions classify them in the category of very important mineral waters. The purity and uniqueness of their taste is due to the natural enrichment of the springs with free carbon dioxide.[6]

At the top of Radosi, to the northwest of the village, there is a landscaped recreation area among a beech forest and overlooking the Amyntaion plain and Lake Petron. There are 4 churches in the village: Agios Georgios, Agios Athanasios, Agios Nikolaos and Agia Varvars. The Primary School building is one of the most important buildings in the area and adorns the village square. It was built before 1880 and has been classified as a listed building. In the village, the dialects of the Eastern South Slavic languages were introduced after the mid-19th century, a fact that made it a target of Bulgarian claims.[7] During these years, the school was also built with the assistance of the villagers and craftsmen from Pelagonia. It was designed by the French and has been classified as a listed monument.[8] In the past, there was also the village watermill, which was destroyed by the passage of time.
Carnival
The factor that makes Xino Nero famous throughout Greece is the carnival events that take place every year in late February and early March.[9] These events are known for the fun, the dancing, the originality and the liveliness of those who take part every year on a voluntary basis. These events start on Tsiknopempti where there is a masked dance with an orchestra and traditional music. However, they officially start the following Thursday with a dance in the village square and a best costume contest at group level. The same happens on Friday and Saturday, while on Sunday at noon the parade of chariots and walking groups is held, often with more than twenty members in each group!
Administrative data
It is officially mentioned, after the liberation, in 1918 with the old name Exisou being designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name and in 1926 being renamed Xino Nero.[10] According to the Kallikratis plan and its amendment by Kleisthenis I, it is a community that falls under the Municipal Community of Amyntaio of the Municipality of Amyntaio while according to the 2021 census the population of the village amounts to 907 residents[11].
