Vyziki (Βυζίκι) Arkadia
Vyziki, formerly known as Vyzitsi or Vyzitzi, is a mountainous village in the Prefecture of Arkadia, within the former Province of Gortynia. According to the Administrative Reform Plan "Kallikratis", it is a Local Community of the Municipal Unit of Tropaia of the Municipality of Gortynia. It is located 85 kilometers northwest of Tripoli, almost on the Tripoli-Pyrgos National Road, approximately halfway between them.
The village is built at an altitude of 750 meters. Its main characteristic is the two central squares, the two "castle houses" in close proximity, the local folklore museum, as well as the church of Agios Nikolaos, which dominates high in the center of the village.
The permanent residents are 232 according to the 2011 census, with most of them being elderly. The main productive activity of the area is livestock farming (mainly sheep and goats), while agriculture comes second.
Vyziki has been officially classified as a traditional settlement.
Historical data and findings
At the eastern edge of the Vyziki district there are remains of the Frankish Castle of Akova[2] and every August - for the last 40 years - cultural events called the "Akova Festival" have been held.
In the same area, antiquities have been found that indicate continuous human presence since ancient times[3]. It may be the ancient city of Teufthis of Pausanias[4], although others argue that Teufthis was the present-day Dimitsana.
The western edge of the village district is located within the area of Ancient Thelpousa[5], the remains of which have not yet been fully excavated.
