Administrative Region : East Macedonia and Thrace
Regional unit : Evros
Vrysika (Βρυσικά) Evros
Vrysika is a lowland village in the Evros regional unit at an altitude of 60 meters[2].
Geography - Sights
Vrysika is located in a valley south of the Erythropotamos River, 17.5 km W-NW from Didymoteicho and 27 km SW from Orestiada. Culturally, it is included in the villages of the Marids, a group of indigenous Thracians with their own clothing and linguistic idioms[3]. The entire valley of Asvestades - Koufovounou - Vrysikas, together with the adjacent cultivated areas (vineyards, orchards, cereal fields) and the hilly country covered with oak trees, is a bird sanctuary and according to the European Ecological Network NATURA 2000 it has been declared a Special Protection Area for the species: Olive Ridley (Hippolais olivetorum) and Black-headed Shrike (Lanius nubicus)[4][5]. Since 2005, a rural house in the village, together with the outbuilding (oven), has been classified as a rural dwelling monument "because it is one of the few surviving examples of a rural house in the Evros region, which preserves interesting construction elements and is a typical example of folk architecture at the end of the 19th century"[6].
History
There are finds in the area that indicate continuous habitation from the early Iron Age to the Byzantine period[7]. Ceramic shards and rock carvings in the "Zontan" area date back to around 1000 BC, while many coins (Vrisikiotis collection) from various periods have been found[8]. According to folklorist Athanasios Gouridis, in the 16th century, native Thracians and Peloponnesians persecuted by the Turks founded the village in its current location around a well. Its depth and color were black, which is how the name "Kara bunar" (meaning Black Well) came about, which the village had during the Turkish occupation.
Administrative
It was officially mentioned as a settlement in 1924 in the Government Gazette 194A-14/08/1924 to be annexed to the then community of Vrysikon[9]. According to the "Kallikratis" Program, together with Savra, it forms the municipal community of Vrysikon, which belongs to the municipal unit of Metaxades of the municipality of Didymoteicho and according to the 2021 census had a population of 233 residents, down from 304 in 2011[10].
