Vrysella (Βρυσέλλα) Thesprotia
Vrysella is a village in the municipality of Filiates, Thesprotia Prefecture, Epirus (Kallikratis Plan). It is 13 kilometers from the capital of the prefecture, Igoumenitsa.
General information
It was formerly part of the province of Filiates, while from 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of a community of the municipality of Filiates. Since 1 January 2011, it has been the seat of the homonymous local community, the municipal unit of Filiates, of the homonymous Municipality.
It is located south of Filiates and 13 km from Igoumenitsa, at an altitude of 120 meters[1]. The population of the settlement, according to the 2011 census, is 267 residents. Ecclesiastically, Vrysella belongs to the Metropolis of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga. The village's main church is dedicated to the Holy Apostles and celebrates its feast day on June 30.[2] On July 17, another festival is held in honor of Saint Marina[3].
Until the end of World War II and the liberation of Thesprotia from the Axis powers in 1944, the majority of Vrysella's residents were Tsami (indicatively in 1940, 616 out of 628 residents were Tsami)[4]. In the meantime, in 1924, an attempt was made to settle Greek refugees from Cappadocia in the settlement, who two years later were relocated to other areas due to tensions with the Muslim community and lack of arable land[5].
The rowing champion and bronze medalist of the 2012 Olympic Games, Alexandra Tsiavou[6], is from Brussels.
