Vrysaki (Βρυσάκι) Imathia

Vrysaki is a settlement in Central Macedonia in the Regional Unit of Imathia.[1][2]

Geographical - Historical information

Vrysaki is located near the border with the Regional Unit of Pella, in the Aliakmonas plain and north of the river at an altitude of 14 meters[3]. The village is approximately 4 km. S.-S.W. from Alexandria (seat of the municipality), 23 km. S. from Giannitsa and 54 km. W. from Thessaloniki (via Chalkidoni) while the Alexandreia - Kozani National Road passes through the southern edge of the village. Its old name, during the Ottoman period, is Resiani[4] or Resaini or Resena, while its current name is due to the stone fountain that existed at the intersection for the Island. The patron church is the Church of the Dormition of the Theotokos, which belongs to the Holy Metropolis of Naoussa, Veria and Kampania.[5]

It is mentioned from the period of the Ottoman occupation and was located south of the lake-marsh of Giannitsa, which was drained in 1932 - 1936, while historically it is included in the villages of the Roumlouki region.[6] Alexander Sinve (in the book "Les Grecs de l' Empire Ottoman. Etude Statistique et Ethnographique") in 1878 wrote that 108 Greeks lived in Resiani of the Diocese of Kampania.[7]

Administrative - Population data

Vrysaki is officially mentioned, after the Balkan Wars and the liberation of Macedonia, in 1918 with the name from the Ottoman occupation as Resiani, being annexed to the then community of Nisio. In 1927, with the Government Gazette 179A - 30/08/1927, it was renamed Vrysaki and in 1950, with the Government Gazette 155A - 15/07/1950, it was designated as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[8] According to the "Kallikratis" Program and its amendment by Kleisthenis I, it constitutes the community of Vrysaki[9] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Alexandreia of the Municipality of Alexandreia, while according to the 2011 census, 669 residents were registered.[10]
