Vrontero (Βροντερό) Florina
Vrontero is a mountainous village in the prefecture of Florina. It is located almost on the Greek-Albanian border, above Lake Mikra Prespa and at an altitude of 1,100 meters. Vrontero belongs to the municipality of Prespa and its population according to the 2011 census is 78 inhabitants.
Caves near the village of Vrontero were the headquarters and hospital of the democratic army during the civil war"[1], one of which is known as the "Kokkali cave[2]". The store of the Municipal District of Vrontero hosts a remarkable collection of fossils from the surrounding area.
The ruined villages of Agathoto and Pyxos are located 2 km from the village. The endemic species of Prespa flora, Centaυrea prespana, grows in Vrontero.
Demographic data
In the early 1900s, 276 Slavic-speaking Christians lived in the village.[3] Vlachs settled in the village in 1949.[3] They were a group of nomadic Vlachs who moved seasonally (known as Arvanito-Vlachs) originating from Thessaly, and the Greek government helped in their settlement in deserted villages in the Prespa region such as Vrontero.[4][5] The Vlachs are the only inhabitants of the village.[4]
Vrontero had 172 inhabitants in 1981.[6] Based on field research carried out by Ricky Van Buschoten in late 1993, Vrontero was inhabited by Vlachs.[6] The Vlach language was used by people of all ages, both in public and private spaces, and as the main language for interpersonal relations.[6] Some elderly villagers had minimal knowledge of Greek.[6]
