Voutsis (Βούτσης) Arkadia
Voutsis is a mountainous settlement in the Peloponnese and the Regional Unit of Arkadia.[2]
Geographical - Historical information
Voutsis is located on the borders with the Regional Unit of Ilia and Achaia, on the southwestern slopes of Mount Aphrodisio at an altitude of 550 meters[3]. It is 51 km. NW. from Dimitsana (seat of the municipality), 63 km. E.-NE. from Pyrgos and 90 km. NW. from Tripoli. The village is built in a lush green area above the Ladonas valley. In its southeast, on a hill near the west bank of the river, opposite the Ladonas Hydroelectric Station, there are the ruins of the "Roupelis Castle" or "Zoumbelas Castle" dating from the Frankish era.[4]
References to the settlement exist before the period of the Revolution of 1821 where it is recorded as Voutsi or Voutzi being included in the then province of Karytaini - Pera Meria section.[5] It is officially mentioned, after the liberation, in 1835 with the name Voutsis being annexed to the then municipality of Velimachia. In 1912, with the Government Gazette 252A - 24/08/1912, it was designated the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[6] According to the Kallikratis plan, it is the local community of Voutsi, which falls under the municipal unit of Kontovazaina of the Municipality of Gortynia and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 107 residents[7] while in 2001 it was 226[8].
