Vourkoti (Βουρκωτή) Andros

Vourkoti is a mountainous settlement in Andros and the South Aegean.[1]

General information

Vourkoti is built on the eastern slopes of Mount Petalos, at an altitude of 620 meters.[1] It is the most mountainous village in Andros and the second highest after Komiaki in Naxos in all the Cyclades. Below the village and to the northeast flows the Achlas River, which ends after a distance of 8 km. in the bay of the same name.[2]

It is surrounded by rich vegetation and streams and its climate is considered healthy. Vourkoti is famous for the production of potatoes, oil and livestock products. It has a beautiful school building built in 1919 at the expense of Leonidas Embirikos, for the maintenance of which there is also a donation from Nikolaos Roussos. It is connected to the island's capital, Chora, by a very old stepped road, a distance of 2.5 hours on foot.

Some claim that it is one of the villages of Andros that was built by Arvanite settlers. Until recently, the Arvanite language survived in Vourkoti, which was spoken by its elderly residents. The population of Vourkoti in 1928 numbered 328 residents, while according to the 2021 census it is 87 residents[3]. Administratively, it belongs to the municipality of Andros.[4]

Very close to Vourkoti, east of the village, is the chapel of "Agios Ioannis Schinos"[5] from where a rich mineral-bearing area extends, starting from the location "Platanistos" and ending at the bay of "Vori". The minerals of this area are rich in manganese, which were once exploited by an English company.
