Vliziana (Βλιζιανά) Aitoloakarnania
Vliziana or Vlyziana (old script: Vlyzana), is a village in the municipality of Astakos, in the regional unit of Aitoloakarnania, 64 km from Messolonghi. In the 2011 census, it had 127 residents.
Built at an altitude of 440 meters, among the Acarnania Mountains, it extends to the eastern foothills of Mount Kalovouni (917 meters).
The main occupation of the inhabitants is agriculture and livestock. In the past, they cultivated vineyards.[2]
Name
The name of the village is probably due to the water that gushes from the ground even in the summer months. The soil has this property and the clay soil is whitish in color.
Churches
Vliziana has as its parish church Agios Nikolaos, which was built in the 19th century and previously Agios Vlasios. To the south of the village is the church of Agioi Anargyroi and to the north is Agia Dutra (on the site of which stood an ancient temple of Hercules), the interior of which is paved with large square stone slabs, and the church of Agios Georgios. Next to the road to Vasilopoulo is the church of the Dormition of the Virgin Mary. To the south of the village is also the church of Agia Paraskevi, while in the past there were the churches of Panagia (towards Kalovouni), Agios Ioannis, Agia Sophia, Agios Petros and Prophet Elias. The Monastery of Agios Nikolaos operated in Manina.
History
Vlzzana (Turkish: Vliziani) is mentioned as early as the 16th century (1521) and was one of the largest villages of Xiromero in the 17th century, with 80 families at that time. From the mid-17th century the population of the village began to decline due to the wars with the Venetians and the Ottomans.[3] Thus, in the second quarter of the 18th century, fewer than ten families lived there.
