Vlatos (Βλάτος ) Chania
Vlatos is a village and the seat of the homonymous community of the municipality of Kissamos in the regional unit of Chania, Crete. It is 54 kilometers from Chania. It is built at an altitude of 380 m. The village is developed in districts (Archontika, Korakiana, Koutsounara, Bertiana, etc.) in a valley with rich vegetation. The main products of the village are olive oil and chestnuts.[1]
Historical information
The area of the village during Venetian times belonged to the Minotto family, who settled serfs in the area of the village during the 15th century to take care of the arable land, gradually creating a village.[2] The village is mentioned in the Venetian census of 1583 by the Kastrofilakas as Vlatos with 52 inhabitants and Francesco Basilicata in 1630 mentions the village as Vlatos. The etymology of the name is unknown. Emmanuel Lambrinakis in his work Geography of Crete (1890) stated that it comes from the word vlavos, and also mentioned that malaria was endemic in the village. Stergios Spanakis considers the etymology from the word valtos more likely.[1]
In 1881 it belonged to the municipality of Ennea Horion and according to the census it had 241 inhabitants. In the census of 1900 it had 255 inhabitants and was part of the same municipality. In 1920 it was the seat of a rural municipality of the same name.[1] In 1925 it was annexed to the community of Elos, but in 1929 it was designated as the seat of the homonymous community, which remained until the Kapodistrian administrative division in 1997, when it was incorporated into the municipality of Inachori.[3]

Points of interest
The main church of the village is dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary. It has been the village cathedral since 1968, while previously the main church was the church of the Holy Trinity.[2] The church of the Holy Trinity was built in 1472 and was originally dedicated to Saint George and the Lady of the Angels. The dedication changed after the conquest of Crete by the Turks. The iconostasis of the church is wooden and bears hagiographies by Emmanuel Papadakis, painted around 1882, while the icon of the Virgin Mary and the Holy Trinity seems to be older. The church was expanded in 1862.[2]
The old school of the village now houses a folklore and ecclesiastical collection.[4]
