Vitoumas (Βιτουμάς) Trikala

Vitoumas[2] or Vytoumas[3] is a settlement in Thessaly in the Trikala Regional Unit.

Geographical - historical information

Vitoumas is located at the eastern foothills of Koziakas and west of Pinios, at an altitude of 240 meters[2][4] and is approximately 10 km. S.-S.W. from Kalampaka (seat of the municipality) and 23 km. N.W. from Trikala. The village is mentioned from the time of the Turkish occupation when it was the old metohi of the historic monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Voutimas which is built further west and higher (altitude 540 m.) on the slopes of the mountain. Its inhabitants are mainly engaged in livestock farming and agriculture.[4]

Vytoumas Castle

Northeast of the village and at a distance of 200 meters, along a spur of the mountain Megali Rachi and at an altitude of 500 meters there are the ruins of the ancient Vytoumas Castle. The perimeter of the walls exceeds 300 meters and they are built externally from irregularly hewn stones of different sizes. In their southern part a semicircular tower survives, while in the eastern part a square one.[4][5]

Holy Monastery of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary Vytouma

According to written sources, the monastery was founded in 1161 at the expense of Konstantinos Tarchaniotis and his wife Zoe and is mentioned in the no. 141 codex of the Monastery of the Transfiguration of the Savior (Great Meteoron) which is a copy of the 17th century. The catholicon is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is located in the center of the precinct. It is a three-aisled basilica with a raised central aisle and a later narthex (1662) on its western side. It has remarkable painted decoration and a wood-carved iconostasis which date back to 1600. South of the entrance to the monastery there is a chapel, which is also dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and dates back to 1559.[5][6] It has been classified as a historical monument since 1993.[7]

Administrative - population data

It was first officially mentioned in 1908 as Metohi Vitouma in the Government Gazette 28A - 08/02/1908 to be annexed to the then municipality of Aegini. It was corrected to Vitoumas in 1940.[8] According to the Kallikrates program and its amendment by Kleisthenes I, together with Kalambaka and Agia Paraskevi, it forms the community of Kalambaka[9] which falls under the Municipal Unit of Kalambaka of the Municipality of Meteora and according to the 2011 census has 175 residents.[10] The population trend after World War II according to the censuses is:
