General information
Vessa is located 19 kilometers southwest of Chios town (road distance), in a valley, from which a possible etymology of the village's name (from the Homeric bessa = valley), and at an average altitude of 180 meters.[3] The area of the homonymous municipal district is 21 square kilometers.
In 1346, it was conquered by the Genoese, who were interested in its mastic trees[4].
It has traditional architecture with narrow streets. It is an old, medieval settlement of the 10th century[5] and a characteristic castle-village ("kastrochori")[4]. The Church of Agios Dimitrios is also of interest. The parish church, however, is honored in the name of the Dormition of the Theotokos and is celebrated on August 15.

It is first officially mentioned in 1918 as the seat of the newly founded community of the same name.[2]
