Vergiana (Βεργιανά) Rethymno

Vergiana is a small lowland village in the Municipality of Mylopotamos[1] in the Regional Unit of Rethymno, Crete. It is located at an altitude of 270 meters[2].

Geography - History

Vergiana is located 28 km. E. from Rethymno and 6 km. SW. from Perama (the seat of the municipality). Its population in the last census (2011) was 9 residents. The village is named after the phrase "the village of the Vergis", i.e. Vergiana. The surname Vergis is still very common today.[3] It is first mentioned in the work of M. Hourmouzis Byzantios "Cretika" in 1842. In 1881 it is mentioned in the Census of Stavrakis as a settlement of the Municipality of Margarita with 76 Christian residents. In 1900 it is mentioned in the municipality of Elefthernaion with 66 inhabitants. In 1920 it is mentioned in the rural municipality of Plevriana, cat. 81 in 1928 in the community of Alfas cat. 74, in 1940 in the Community of Margaritas cat. 60, in 1961 cat. 50, in 1971 cat. 30. in 1981 cat. 23 and in 1991 19 inhabitants. After the integration of Crete with Greece, it is mentioned in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925 to be annexed to the then community of Alfas[4]. According to the Kallikratis plan, it belongs to the local community of Margaritas which falls under the municipal unit of Geropotamos of the Municipality of Mylopotamos and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 9 inhabitants[5]. The residential complex owned by Chr. Polychronakis has been classified as a historical monument[6].

Ecclesiastical affiliation

The village church is dedicated to Agia Varvara and belongs to the parish of Plevriana of the 4th Archdiocese of the Holy Metropolis of Rethymno and Avlopotamos of the Church of Crete and is decorated with icons from the 19th century[7].
