History

Velanidia is a recent settlement, just a century old, of the old community of Kiveri. It began to be built during the 1920s and 1930s. The area initially attracted livestock farmers from the surrounding mountainous areas. It was gradually inhabited, developed and acquired its current form.

The Oak was first recognized in 1940 and showed a significant increase until 1961. Since then, the population has stabilized and started to decline in recent decades.

Employment

Today, the residents of Velanidia are mainly engaged in agriculture. Agricultural exploitation is also observed in the surrounding areas. Apricots and olive crops dominate at the foot of the mountains of Arcadia. Livestock farming is present, but has now been significantly reduced.
Sights

Velanidia is dominated by the Church of Saints Constantine and Helen.
In the center of the village, there is still a fountain built during the Ottoman occupation, which carried water from Sougelo, a spring 1 kilometer away.
Next to the village there is a stop, through which the Athens-Kalamata railway line passed. The "Kotsoni" stop is also known as "kilometer 73". The railway was the main transport solution until the 1980s.

Around the 1970s, the provincial road was opened and asphalt was laid from Spiliotaki to Elaichori. Since then, road transport has begun to develop more.

The settlement of Andritsa is 6 kilometers from Velanidia. The main area of the homonymous cave has dimensions of 65X75 m. and is a single room.[6][7] Its exploration in early 2004 by the Ephorate of Paleoanthropology-Speleology of Southern Greece brought to light a particularly unusual archaeological find. Specifically, human skeletal remains and several objects of daily use, vessels, coins were found. This revelation, as well as the mystery that still exists regarding the reason that led people to this cave, fascinates many to this day. The cave abyss of Andritsa became known in the scientific world as the "cave abyss of Velanidia", since it is equally distant from the two settlements. The first data on the closed archaeological complex of the Velanidia-Andritsa cave were announced at the 25th Congress of the Hellenic Archaeological Society (13-15 May 2005).[8]
