Vela (until 1928: Ta Vella[2]; until 1940: Vella[3]) is a mountainous village in the municipality of Aigialeia, Achaia prefecture. According to the 2021 census, the village has a population of 56 permanent residents[4].

Location

Vela is built at an altitude of 838 meters, on the slopes of Marmari peak of the Helmos mountain range, southeast[2] of the prefecture's capital, Patras and Aigio and northeast of Kalavryta.

General and historical information

The settlement is mentioned since before the Ottoman period[2] and according to a local tradition it owes its name to the Byzantine city of Epirus, Vella, whose inhabitants are said to have settled in the area. Vella is mentioned in 1853 in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as belonging to the municipality of Felloi in the province of Kalavryta, while its population amounted to 378 inhabitants[5]. In the following decades, the permanent population of Vella decreased sharply as the majority of the inhabitants - who worked mainly as farmers and livestock breeders - moved during the winter months to the wider area of Aigialeia, with the result that during the 1920 census only eight inhabitants were counted in the settlement[6].

Administratively, Vella was placed in the Kalavryta district of the prefecture of Achaia and Elis in 1835, while with the final separation of the prefecture, it was annexed to Achaia. In 1944, it was placed in the Aigialeia district and in 1997, after the changes that came to the local government through the Kapodistrias plan, it was designated a local district of the municipality of Aigeira. With the implementation of the Kallikratis program, it was placed administratively under the municipality of Aigialeia[3].

The central church of the village is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary and is celebrated every year on August 15. The bishop of Ilia and Oleni, Damaskinos Spiliotopoulos (1848 - 1917), was born in Vella[7].
