Vavouri or Vavourio is a mountainous village in the municipality of Filiates in the region of Epirus (Kallikratis Plan). According to the 2021 census, it has 15 residents.

General information

It is located 40 km north of Filiates[1] and is one of the northernmost villages in the prefecture, built at an altitude of 670 meters[2], in the area of Mourgana[3]. Its residents are mainly engaged in livestock farming.

Ecclesiastically, it belongs to the Metropolis of Paramythia, Filiates, Giromeri and Parga[4]. The village church is dedicated to the Assumption of the Virgin Mary. A short distance away is the monastery of Agios Athanasios, where a festival is held on May Day. Other festivals in the village take place on July 17, the feast of Saint Marina, and on August 15th[5].
Historical information

At the location "Kastri", between the present-day villages of Vavouri and Lias, the ruins of an ancient walled settlement have been identified, the existence of which is also likely to have occurred in the imperial period.[6]

The first settlers of the modern village are said to have been residents of the Vourkos region, who fled to the mountains in order to avoid possible conversion to Islam[7]. Historically, it belongs to the so-called "Panochoria" of Mourgana[3]. According to the Ottoman statistics of 1895, the population of Vavouri amounted to 883 residents (439 men and 444 women) who were distributed in 184 tax khanes[8]. The village developed significantly from an economic point of view during the first half of the 20th century[1].

During the Occupation, it is estimated that five residents of the village were killed by the Axis forces[9]. This was followed by the period of the Civil War, during which Vavouri passed from late 1947 under the control of the DSE, while the majority of its residents were forcibly deported to Eastern Europe[10].

The chieftain of the 1854 Epirus Revolution, Dimitris Domaris, was born in Vavouri, who during the uprising attacked the Filiates, burning down Muslim houses and taking several hostages[11] (among them the mother of a powerful local Tsami notable)[12][13].

Administratively, during the late Ottoman rule, Vavouri was under the kaza of Filiates[8], while after its incorporation into the Greek state during the Balkan Wars, it was subordinated to the province of Filiates. From 1999 to 2010, according to the then administrative division of Greece, it was the seat of a community of the municipality of Filiates. Since 1 January 2011, it has been the seat of the homonymous local community, the municipal unit of Filiates, the homonymous municipality.
