Vasilopoulo (Βασιλόπουλον) Aitoloakarnania
Vasilopoulo is a lowland village in the Aitoloakarnania prefecture with an altitude of 60 meters[2][3].
Geographical - historical information
Vasilopoulo is located at the foot of Mount Veloutsa in the Akarnania Mountains, on the provincial road Astakou - Babinis. The village is 7 km. N. from Astakos, 43 km. N. W. from Aitoliko and 40 km. W. from Agrinio[4].
The original location of the village was further west than the current one, near the old Dragamesto (Karaiskakis) and at an altitude of 140 meters. The old village began to be abandoned after a devastating earthquake that occurred in 1953 and its inhabitants moved further east to its current location where the settlement of Panagia or Achilleio was located. This settlement was renamed Vasilopoulo in 1976 and is almost united with the village of Karaiskakis, Ioannina [2].
The area's attractions are the churches of Agios Georgios the Younger, which was deemed a monument in need of special state protection, as well as the Panagia (Dormition) in the settlement of Achilleios Vasilopoulos as a historical monument[5], which is believed to have been built around 1200-1300 during the Byzantine Empire, which has burned down about twice
Administrative information
It was officially mentioned as a settlement, after the Revolution of 1821, in 1928 with its old name Panagia being annexed to the then community of Vasilopoulos. In 1965, with the Government Gazette 207A - 15/11/1965, it was designated as the seat of the homonymous community of Vasilopoulos and in 1976 with the Government Gazette 144A - 12/06/1976, it was renamed Vasilopoulos.[6] According to the Kallikratis plan, it constitutes the local community of Vasilopoulos, which falls under the municipal unit of Astakos of the Municipality of Xiromeros and according to the 2011 census has a population of 465 residents[7].
