Valtotopi (Βαλτοτόπι) Serres

Valtotopi, Serres is a lowland village of the Serres Regional Unit with an altitude of 14 meters[1].

Geography - History

Valtotopi is located southeast of the city of Serres at a distance of 15 kilometers from it. It belongs to the municipality of Emmanouil Papas and has a population of 846 residents, according to the 2011 census[2]. Its old name until 1926 was Beylik Mahale and thus it is officially mentioned in 1920 in the Government Gazette 2A - 04/01/1920 as being annexed to the then community of Geni Mahala (Peponias)[3]. In 1922, refugees from Malgara in Eastern Thrace settled in the village.

During the three-day period from 16 to 18 July, events are held in the village square in honor of Agia Marina, as well as on the feast of Agios Georgios: on that day the cultural association organizes the "kurbani", where the entire village gathers in the square and watches traditional dances[4]. The kurbani is an animal that is roasted by the village cultural association and given to the church. The church in turn distributes it first to the poor and what is left to the villagers. Then traditional dances follow from the cultural association.
