Valta (Βάλτα) Messinia

alta is a village in the prefecture of Messinia, built at an altitude of 260 meters[3] between the towns of Filiatra and Gargaliana. It is the seat of the local community of Valta in the municipality of Trifylia and according to the 2011 census it has a population of 277 inhabitants[4].

History

The village was originally built east of its current location, in a location that was abandoned for security reasons[5]. The village is mentioned in various censuses of the Venetian Pronoites of the Serene Republic of Venice, which were carried out during the thirty-year period (1683/84-1715), during which the Venetians occupied the Peloponnese. Valta belonged, in 1689, to the province of Arcadia (Kyparissia), which was one of the 4 provinces into which the Methoni district was divided (Phanariou province, Arcadia province, Navarinou province and Methoni province).[6] The settlement is mentioned in 1853 in the second volume of "Hellenic" by Iakovos Rizos Ragavis as part of the municipality of Erani in the province of Triphylia with a population of 66 inhabitants[7] while later, until 1997, it constituted a homonymous community of the same province. In 1997, as part of the changes that occurred in local government through the "Kapodistrias" plan, it was placed under the municipality of Gargalianoi[3], while since 2011, after the new changes of the "Kallikratis" plan, it belongs to the municipality of Trifylia[4].

Residents

The residents of Valta are mainly engaged in agriculture (olive oil production, raisin production and vineyards).

Buildings and sights of the village

The old school building houses a museum displaying rocks and fossils from Greece and Africa, as well as paintings. Near the village are the waterfall of the "Red Fathers" gorge and the forest of Vangelistra, which took its name from the monastery of the same name. In the forest of the same name there is also a Frankish fountain dating back to the early 13th century[5].

The Rector of the University of Athens (EKPA) Georgios Paraskevopoulos and the painter Sotiris Gkardiakos or Garsot[23] originate from Valta.
