Tsoukka[2] or Tsouka[3], is a mountainous village of Central Greece in the Regional Unit of Evrytania.

Geography - Sights

Tsoukka is located towards the western border with the Regional Unit of Aitoloakarnania on the slopes of the Evrytani (southern) Agrafa at an altitude of 600 meters[2]. It is built to the north of the artificial lake of Kremastos near the point (west) where the Agrafiotis River ends. It is 15 km. W.-S.W. from Kerasochori (seat of the municipality), 53 km. W.-N.W. from Karpenisi and about 6 km. S. from Agios Prokopios, of which it has long been considered a settlement. The village has two neighborhoods, Tsoukka where the parish church of Saints Constantine and Helen is located and Ano Tsoukka further west at the edge of which there is the "Castle of Tsoukkas"[4]. The top of the hill there is surrounded by fortifications from classical-Hellenistic times and the area has been designated an archaeological site. "The fortification is preserved in places at a height of 8 buildings (3.50 m). A gate of the wall and two of its four-sided towers are also preserved. Visible residential remains have been identified within the enclosure, which are associated with the use of the area in the Byzantine and post-Byzantine times".[5] Northeast of the village is the modern Tatarna Bridge, built between 1965 and 1970, through which passes a provincial road connecting Evrytania with Aitoloakarnania.[6] Southeast of the village is the old bridge or "Manolis Bridge"[7] It is a stone single-arch bridge that spanned the Agrafiotis and which is in the waters of Lake Kremasta most of the year. It was built in 1659 and its name probably comes from the Epirus master builder who built it, Manolis Chrysiotis.[8]
Administrative

As a separate settlement, Tsoukka is officially mentioned for the first time in 1961, being registered in the then community of Palaiokatouna (Agios Prokopios).[9] According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Agios Prokopios and Ampares, they form the local community of Paleokatouna, which belongs to the municipal unit of Fragistas of the Municipality of Agrafa and according to the 2011 census has a population of 130 inhabitants.[10]
