Tsoukalaiika (Τσουκαλαίικα) Achaia
Tsoukalaiika or Tsoukaleika (or rarely, from its old name, Tsoukala) is a seaside village in the former province of Patras, Achaia Prefecture, former Kapodistrian municipal district of the Municipality of Vrachneika. It is 13 kilometers from Patras and 3 kilometers from Kato Achaia, bordering the villages of Vrachneika, Alissos, Kaminia and the industrial zone of Patras. The former settlement (now a district) of Anemomylos also belongs to Tsoukaleika. The municipal district has 393 residents according to the 2011 census[2].
The area is served since 29 February 2020 by Line 2 of the Patras Suburban Railway through the "Tsoukalaiika / Tsoukaleika" stop, a stop from which a bus service to the Industrial Zone of Patras is planned.
History
Remains from the Hellenistic and Mycenaean periods and many farmhouses from the Roman period have been found in the area.
Before the revolution, in the area, approximately 2 kilometers from the current village, there was the village of "Tsoukala" or "Tzoukala", which was first mentioned during the Venetian occupation in the 17th century. Its name, Tsoukala, comes from the first settler of the village. Today's Tsoukalaika belonged to the village of Tsoukala where, after the revolution of 1821, shepherds from Souvardo of Kalavryta came down and stayed in huts for the winter with their sheep. From these shepherds it was also called "Souvardaiika", Puckeville mentions it as "Souvala". Gradually, the residents of Tsoukalas settled in the area, which was subsequently abandoned and today the ruins of its houses are preserved[3].
During the revolution of 1821, a battle took place in the village of Tsoukalas between Greeks, sons of Kolokotronis, Plapoutas and Petimezeos, and Ottomans, the Ottoman camp had been set up in the village.
It is first mentioned as a settlement in the 1899 census, where the village of Tsoukalas is not mentioned; it was mentioned in the previous census of 1879, which must have already been abandoned.
Political history
With the N.D. 8/4/1835, Tsoukalaiika became a settlement of the municipal district of Dresthenes of the Municipality of Messatidos[4]. With the N.D. On 3/7/1836, the Municipality of Messatida was merged, in essence absorbed, with the Municipality of Patras and Tsoukalaika was incorporated into the Municipality of Dymi[5]. With the Government Gazette 256A - 28/08/1912 and the abolition of the municipalities, it became an independent community together with the village of Theriano, which in 1919 was separated to become an independent community. With the Government Gazette - 16/10/1940, the name was corrected from Tsoukalaika to Tsoukalaika, with the Government Gazette - 19/03/1961, the settlement of Anemomylos was recognized and annexed to the community[6][7].
In 1998, with the Kapodistrias Plan, it became a municipal district of the Municipality of Vrachnaikos.
Anemomylos Neighborhood of Achaia
The village's neighborhood is Anemomylos[8], which is adjacent to Kaminia near the location "Skagia(s)". Anemomylos was registered as an autonomous settlement, before being incorporated into Tsoukalaiika, from 1961 to 2001[9]. On 09/05/2011 it was abolished as a settlement[8]. According to testimonies, it has existed as a location at least since 1890[1].
