Tsachiana (Τσαχιανά ) Rethymno

Tsachiana is a settlement in the Kryoneri Community of the Municipality of Mylopotamos in the Rethymno Regional Unit of Crete, at an altitude of 380 meters.[1]

Geographical - historical data

Tsachiana is located on the border with the Heraklion Regional Unit at a distance of 47 km. E. from Rethymno (via Panormos) and 20 km. E.-NE. from Perama (seat of the municipality). The village is built at the southern foot of Kouloukonas, next to the settlements of Agridia (NE.) and Aimonas (E.). The most important attraction of the area is the fortress-type Monastery of Halepa, which has been classified as a historical monument[2]. It is built on a hill overlooking the Mylopotamos valley and was completely renovated in the early 2000s. The monastery is first mentioned in Venetian notary documents from 1555-1625, while during the period of Turkish rule it played an important role in the struggle.[3][4] The village, as a separate settlement, is officially mentioned in 1925 in the Government Gazette 27A - 31/01/1925 to be annexed to the then community of Klepsimion[5]. According to the Kallikratis plan, together with Agridia and Kryoneri, it forms the local community of Kryoneri, which falls under the municipal unit of Kouloukonas of the Municipality of Mylopotamos and according to the 2011 census has a population of 22 residents[6].
